My copy of Borderlands arrived in the mail today. I came home excited to play it, but decided to go out to Lindsay's class' art opening instead. I guess that might be nice. I brought my computer to do some work. I talked to some folks and did some artwork, trying to hide out from the crowd. We got home at about 10, and after we ate I finally cracked open Borderlands...
It seemed OK, but less than 1/2 hour later, Lindsay realized she left some very important papers at the studio... and she was too busy to get them. So at 11:00 I jumped into the car and drove to uptown to fetch the papers in question.
I got back at nearly midnight, but I was determined to at least get a taste of Borderlands apart from the tutorial. And I played until 2 am, which is a bit longer than I should have. But so far, it seems pretty great.
The shooting is really solid, the leveling and skill trees seem interesting and the sound design is great. The guns, especially the sniper rifles, really snap. I spent most of the time playing with my super nice headphones, which is always a lot of fun when the game has got really solid, crisp gun audio...
I should finish up Brutal Legend. I'm basically one brief series of missions away from the end. I liked the game, but I am split. There were moments and specific parts (mainly the art and world) that were just amazing and I just loved seeing everything and exploring the world. Overall I had a darn good time, but the combat was a little sloppy, the user interface was sometimes a little vague and the RTS elements a little too... random?
I feel like I always win, and it was easy, but I never know why. I never feel confident or even like I know what's really going on. Often times a battle would end and I'd say "Oh really? I win? Good. I'm glad I don't have to do that again."
I'm not finished, and I really, really liked a whole lot of it. And I do want to keep going back to that world every once in a while. It's pretty sweet.
So sweet, in fact, that I might be going as a certain character from that game. Like, maybe the main character. And maybe I might have some friends as supporting characters to cruise around with. Just maybe...

Lady bug be gone.
I'm getting a new car. It's a Honda Fit. I might not get it today, or this week. Or this month. But I will get it sometime this year. I've already researched it, picked it out, test drove it a couple times, got an estimate on a trade in for my car and planned out any accessories I might need. I'm pretty much set. In fact, I've been set for months.
But I decided to wait until after the wedding, since weddings are very, very expensive. We tried to keep the whole wedding cheap, but things add up, people add up, plans add up, and while we might not have surpassed the somewhat standardized 20,000 dollar mark, we easily exceeded the 10,000 dollar one.
Luckily we're horrible with finances and keeping track of our money, so we'll never know exactly how painful it really was. Heck, I guess it could have been 30,000 and I wouldn't have known the difference. We're that bad.
But now that things have settled down, and I'm a fair bit lighter in the wallet, I'm getting back in the new car mode. My car has served me well. It's been in the family since 1999 (and I crashed it that same year), and I've owned it since 2004. And I am rough on cars.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I've put thousands in over the years (especially in 2007 I think. EVERYTHING came apart that year), but it still runs. So while I think I'm justified in my decision to get a new car, part of me still feels guilty and wasteful.
But I'm trading it in, and they're giving me a surprising amount of credit for it, so I'm anxious to just do it before they wise up...
So yeah. I don't know why I wrote this post, I guess I was just thinking about it as I was driving around in the rain on my way to and from work today.

- Here's a list of things wrong with my car off the top of my head:
- It runs completely out of oil about every 2 months. I try to fill up the oil every other time I get gas, but hey, I'm busy.
- The gas cap mechanism is broken, so I have to use my key to pry it open every time. For 3 years.
- The CD changer is broken, and has been for 5 years. Luckily I use an iPod with an FM adapter
- The headlights chronically go out. I have to get one changed about once a month. And it's been like this since I got it. And I've gotten tickets for it. And I don't know how to change it, so I've had to get a mechanic to do it every time. And I don't want to learn how to do it.
- The passenger side seat doesn't move forward, thanks to Becky breaking the handle. So if I want someone to get in the back, I have to get out.
- The air conditioner doesn't work. At all.
- The driver's side window only goes down 3/4 the time. And only comes back up 1/2 the time.
- The passenger side window is only slightly better.
- The sun roof is kind of broken and whistles at high speeds.
- It shakes at high-ish speeds. Getting an alignment only helped a bit. For a few days.
- It's rusty.
- I cannot score the ladies in it...
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I've put thousands in over the years (especially in 2007 I think. EVERYTHING came apart that year), but it still runs. So while I think I'm justified in my decision to get a new car, part of me still feels guilty and wasteful.

Completely Charted.
Last night I hit the gym and then hung out with big CC. We got some food, talked some talk, and stopped by the Laundromat...
Lindsay came home early from teaching class, and we all sat around as I finished that last 45 minutes of Uncharted 2: Honor Among Thieves. And I think we all agree that Uncharted 2 is a blast-factory of awesome parties and explosive radness.
Lindsay and I knew the ending was near as we booted up the game, and there was a sense of sadness and reluctance. We didn't want it to end.
Although I'll admit if it went on any longer, it could risk being too long. It's easily over t10 hours, which is 10 hours of constant, story-driven, rollercoaster-esque momentum.
That's kind of exhausting after a while. So I guess even though I was sad it ended, any longer would have been pushing it. But it did leave me wanting more...
I'm not feeling so hot today, for some reason. Which sucks, but maybe it's because I stayed up until 2 am like usual, but had to be to work early to make sure I prepared for a meeting...
I should really not do that.

Excitement personified.
I got really into Demon's Souls. That game is amazing. Last Thursday Chris C came over and worked on some freelance while I played. He helped, though. It's pretty hard, so he helped navigate the complex dungeons and gave his opinion when I had doubts about fighting an enemy that might be over my head or going down a particularly foreboding corridor. That game is sweet. And, while difficult, I'm finding it to be easier that most people make it sound...
I woke up early Friday morning to the sound of my phone ringing. I didn't know what time it was, but I didn't care. It was too early to be answering phones, that much is certain...
Turns out my sister had her baby. So my two pregnant sisters and now both officially my two sisters with children. Unfortunately, I still had to go to work, despite the news.
So I did that, and it was an exhausting day. I went to the gym afterwords, and then hung out with Adam. We went to Yum and met up with Becky, and after that I gave Adam a quick tour of the ins and outs of Demon's Souls and Uncharted 2. We made a billion cookies (for Lindsay's class) and I also played some Halo 3: ODST with Ryan online.
Adam didn't leave until pretty late, but I forced myself to get up at a reasonable hour the next morning. I always immediately go into the "sleep until noon, stay up until 5 am" routine every weekend, and I'm trying to break myself of that since it makes the first 1/2 of the work week so rough...
Lindsay and I went to the circus in the afternoon, which was cool. We each got a hot dog and some popcorn, which is unusual for us. But that hot dog was really, really good for some reason. After all the excitement, we were tired so we went home to rest up. I prepared to fight a dragon in Demon's Souls (which meant grinding out the cash to buy 300 arrows to use against the dragon).
Later that night we went out to the 112 Eatery with Chris C, Jessie and Ryan. It was a good time. There were a whole lot of dirty jokes. Maybe more than usual.
Sunday was a chill day. I beat the last level of ODST with Ryan. I played a TON of Uncharted 2, which is surprisingly long. I keep playing because I think I'm 5 minutes from the end, but hours pass. That's happened twice, at least. And still totally amazing. It keeps getting better. We took the dogs for a walk and I cooked some diner, and we wrote about 100 Thank Yous for the wedding. But we tried not to leave the house too much, and we made sure not to invite anyone over, which has a tendency to happen unexpectedly.

Time to do some laundry.
We finally got our new washing machine delivered yesterday. But it wasn't smooth.
They were scheduled to deliver between 10am-2pm so Lindsay postponed a meeting until the afternoon to be there. But they didn't show until 2:30. And the delivery guy got mad at Lindsay and wouldn't bring it any further than the garbage cans out back. Because we don't have a "real driveway." Which is technically true, but we live in Minneapolis, no one has a real driveway. The dude only had a palette jack, and no dolly, so he just left it out back.
Lindsay had to leave for he meeting, which she was now late for, and our brand-new, still-packaged 800 dollar washing machine sitting out by the trash in the alley.
So I left work at 3:30 to stop by a Rental place, grab a dolly, go home, load it up, pull it to the house and unpack it (it was had about a 1 inch gap to get through the door and down the stairs).
By that point Chris C was getting off work, so he came by to help get it down the stairs. I wanted to take the old washer out, because if we didn't do it now, we probably never would...
We started to take a hose off the back of the old machine, and water sprayed everywhere until we found the shut off valve. Finally we had the new one in and the old one out. I made it back to the rental place at 6, just as they were closing. It was crappy, but I felt a sense of accomplishment. I take the small victories.
I also picked up Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend yesterday. I had to decide which to play, and I picked Uncharted 2 to start with. I figured it's more straight forward, so Brutal Legend's open world will have to wait.
I got an hour or two into Uncharted, and I'm pretty sure that it's officially has the best graphics I've ever seen in a videogame. I won't go nuts over it, but there have been a few locations where I've just spun the camera and been like "I can't even believe they made this, every person who works at Naughty Dog must be so awesome and talented and on point it's ridiculous."
Plus, the game is just really fun. I knew it would be. The first Uncharted was great, and this just polishes everything up a bit. It's like Gears of War gunplay (but less powerful) with Tomb Raider exploration and climbing (but less awkward). It's pretty great.
This week (and weekend) has also been kind of strange because I almost got a new job. There was a place that was looking for someone, and I was interested. I'm not actively pursuing a new job, but it they could pay me what I required, it would have been a fun switch.
But Lindsay ended up working out a perfect deal with them. I won't go into details, besides Lindsay is still doing Paper Bicycle in full effect, but I am relieved she got it to all work out. It would have been a great job, but some not-immediately-apparent negatives started to surface and I was starting to rethink my decision. So now I don't have to worry about it.

long week, short weekend.
It's been a tough week. The wedding and following events left me drained but restless at work. Oh well.
I got Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising. It came out Tuesday, supposedly, but it was a pain to get a hold of. With a little help from Chris C, I finally got my mitts on it Wednesday night. Chris C came over and we took turns playing it, and it is mighty awesome...
This trailer makes it seem a whole lot more bombastic than it really is.
I can see how people would find it intolerable. It's pretty darn realistic and unforgiving. It's also very slowly paced and requires a ton of patience... If you're expecting something like Call of Duty, you will probably be sorely disappointed.
But I've always been up for trying some ultra-real, deliberately paced, tactical shooting, and up to this point I haven't found anything to satisfy despite my best efforts... Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2 were a good start, and GRAW 2 might have been even closer, but still too hand-holding and directed. Socom Confrontation, the multiplayer-only shooter, had potential, but ultimately squandered it with some terrible design choices.
Up to this point, Far Cry 2 has provided the open-ended, stalk through the weeds, hunter/hunted vibe I was looking for. Which is probably why I loved that game to no end...
But Operation Flashpoint seems to do everything I was looking for, and so far I adore it. I won't go into great detail, but I will say that the single player is awesomely tactical (and brutal) which I expected. Even the multiplayer seems to be holding up to the test, in an amazing way. Most stealthy, tactical shooters boil down to cheap exploits and decidedly un-stealth-like behavior when a bunch of real people play online, but the harsh consequences and wide-open world of Flashpoint make it awfully hard to game the system... yet.
I am also amazed at the civility and respectful nature of the players I've met online so far. Compared to Halo or COD, it's like a Utopian society. Maybe I've just been lucky, though. I've had a lot of amazing, tense matches, and despite some server-side hiccups, I am totally happy with the game.
Friday I got off work and met Lindsay in Uptown. We went to out to eat, and then ran a bunch of errands. We got yarn and some groceries, then we stopped at Gamestop and grabbed Sacred 2.
I've been wondering about Sacred 2 for a long time. I think it looks kind of terrible, but I heard it was a great 2 player, same screen co-op game in the vein of Diablo. Lindsay likes Diablo. Lindsay likes fantasy. Lindsay likes co-op, so I thought we could use the Gamestop gift certificate we got for the wedding to get something we could play together. And it's fun and kind of old school, although it's got a whole lot of problems and I probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone I know...
But it's definitely got that old Diablo, or MMO kind of addictiveness thanks to the constant leveling and looting.
Together we played Sacred 2 late into the night, and Lindsay made a scarf while I started a 2nd Sacred 2 character...
We stayed up WAY too late, and didn't wake up until about 1 today. We cleaned the house and made some plans to organize the shit out of it. Then we went on a whirlwind tour of Patina (for some trend shopping), Target (to return some wedding gift duplicates), the airport (to drop Ryan off) and we finally ended up at the Mall O' America.
I needed some new headphones, so I stopped by the Best Buy and I got some sweet Sony cans. I looked at the Dr Dre headphones, and they were amazing. But 300.00 bucks is way too much to spend considering I treat my headphones like crap...
Lindsay went nuts buying sweaters and shoes, and came home with quite the haul. I soured the place for a copy of Demon's Souls, but came up empty handed... I wasn't even going to get it thanks to the brutal difficulty, but then I decided maybe I would... as soon as i found out it was sold out everywhere, I became obsessed with finding it. Ha.
Also, check out the Giant Bomb Quicklook if you've got some time. If that doesn't make you love it, I don't know what will...
We went out to Longfellow Grill and got some grub, which was so amazing I want to cry, and now we're playing Sacred 2 again... although I should be slaying Demon's. Or maybe their Souls...

Game Face 2.
Last year I made a list of the games I was planning on picking up during this end-of-the-year blitzkrieg of games. So I'll do the same this year...
Here's a rough list of the games on my radar. I may have forgot some, and some will probably get added along the way, but this is a good estimate of what I'm looking forward to through the end of the year... this time with platform indicators...

Reservoir Turtles.
When I was in grade school/middle school (and onwards to this day, I guess) I watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles religiously.
When I was in high school/college, I watched Reservoir Dogs just as many times...
Now, finally, I get to watch these two great tastes taste great together.

Wedding.

The wedding is over, and I feel like so much happened I can't even write about it. So I think, when the time comes, I'll just post tons of pictures and that should sum it up...
But in summary, it was amazing. Pretty much everything went better than expected. The place was packed, the jams were loud, the people were happy and rowdy.
Tons of people showed up, and everyone was in the dancing/party mood.
Bach was the best DJ in the world and absolutely killed it start to finish. The photo booth was awesome, and the girl helping everyone was hilarious. The photographer was super cool, and kept saying it was the best wedding ever.
The food was looked and smelled awesome, but I didn't get to eat any. The booze and soda flowed freely, but I only drank water.
The decorations were fly, the ladies were fly, and I danced like I was flying.
Hot shit, hot shit. Can't wait for the professional photos to come back...

It was awesome.
